A Concert for Mindanao

At 7:37 AM on June 8, 2026, the very morning Filipino children returned to school after the summer, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck offshore southern Mindanao, approximately 32 km south of Maasim, Sarangani.^[2] The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) attributed the earthquake to subduction along the Cotabato Trench. Shaking lasted approximately 30 seconds and was felt across Soccsksargen, Davao, and Bangsamoro, reaching as far as Davao City, Tagum, and Cotabato City. More than 6 million people were exposed to strong or very strong shaking.^[3]

Buildings collapsed. Roads were severed. A tsunami warning was briefly issued for coastal communities. The cities of General Santos and the provinces of Sarangani and South Cotabato bore the worst of the destruction, with more than 30% of homes in General Santos alone damaged or destroyed. Across all of Mindanao, over 138,500 homes were damaged or destroyed.^[1]

The confirmed human toll: at least 106 lives lost, over 1,300 people injured, and 7 still reported missing. The earthquake was described by officials as among the most destructive in the Philippines in five decades, surpassed only by the 1976 Moro Gulf earthquake and tsunami that killed 8,000 along this same Cotabato Trench.

Mindanao has long been one of the most seismically active regions on earth. It sits at the convergent boundary between the Sunda and Philippine Sea plates, the same fault zone that produced major earthquakes in 1918, 1976, and 2002. The 2026 earthquake is a sobering reminder that for the people of southern Mindanao, living with seismic risk is a generational reality.

Food, clean water, medical care, and temporary shelter remain in critical demand across the affected provinces. The scale of need far exceeds what outside agencies can meet alone. The people of Mindanao are resilient, but they should not have to face this without the solidarity of those who share their heritage.
